Morte is probably the best character in the game, strangely enough, since he's not the most expensive or hard to get. He starts with high and balanced stats, high mana, and a very good ability.
He is great with any build. You will want to save the Winter Chill skill for monsters with particularly high attack. Even without this skill, his passive makes it easy to heal himself provided you can learn one of the healing skills.
His low Luck may make a run reliant on having the money to buy equipment from stores.
